The department has a state of art geochemistry laboratory for Geological and Environmental Sample Analysis

Samples handled:

Ø  Geological Samples. Analyze for Gold, Silver, Copper, Cobalt, Nickel, Chromium e.t.c in the following samples:

·         Exploration rock and soil samples

·         Ore samples for gold, platinum, gemstones and industrial minerals (kaolinite, marble e.t.c.)

Ø  Environmental Samples including:

·         Waste water (analyze for Mercury, Arsenic, Selenium, Lead and Cadmium)

·         Soil samples for agricultural projects (analyze for: Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Nitrogen and phosphate)

·         Vegetation samples for different plant species

·         Fish samples for traces of metal pollutants (analyze for Mercury, Arsenic, Lead e.t.c)

Ø  Portable water samples for quality assessment

·         Borehole, spring wells and tap water for presence of pollutants e.g. heavy metals

Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS)

UV-Spectrophotometer

• Others: X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), pH meter, Electrolyte Conductivity (EC) and turbidity portable meters

Ø  Petrographic Analysis of geological samples

·         Petrographic microscopic analysis

·         Thin-section making equipment

Ø  Compressive and shear-stress tests on rock and core samples
